In digital printing devices, toner particles are applied initially to the paper in a loose, powdery state. Without post-transfer treatment, these particles would easily smudge or fall off. The fuser roller applies consistent mechanical force as the paper travels through the fuser unit. This force compresses the toner tightly against the cellulose structure. The dual action of thermal and mechanical force causes the liquefied toner to sink marginally into the fibers rather than remaining superficially.
